of Waswanipi

Light on the Water

Waswanipi means “Light on the Water”, it describes our past when we used the torch light fueled by pine tar, to spear and catch sturgeon that had gathered to spawn at the mouth of Waswanipi River.

Message from Chief

Irene Neeposh

I’m thrilled to introduce you to the vibrant Cree community of Waswanipi. Situated gateway to Eeyou Istchee, Waswanipi is a place rich in cultural heritage and deeply connected to the land. The name “Waswanipi,” meaning “Light on the Water” in Cree, reflects its natural beauty, with boreal forests, pristine lakes, and an environment central to the community’s way of life.

Waswanipi is known for its warm and inviting spirit, where traditions are cherished and maintained through activities like hunting, fishing, and gathering. Cultural events and ceremonies are key to daily life, highlighting Cree traditions through storytelling and traditional crafts, and offering a glimpse into the community’s vibrant heritage.

The community is guided by a vision of being a forward-thinking society that is both healthy and prosperous. Its mission is to “light the way by empowering our people and our land.” These statements are built on seven pillar priorities: preserving the Cree culture and language, promoting health and wellness, enhancing education and capacity building, fostering economic development, ensuring environmental stewardship, strengthening governance, and improving infrastructure and housing.

At the same time, Waswanipi is embracing modernity while staying true to its roots. The community is engaged in educational initiatives, community programs, and sustainable development projects that align with Cree values of environmental stewardship and communal well-being.

It’s a privilege to introduce you to Waswanipi, a place where tradition and modernity come together to create a unique blend of culture, community, and natural beauty. We look forward to receiving you in our community!
