Light on the Water
Waswanipi means “Light on the Water”, it describes our past when we used the torch light fueled by pine tar, to spear and catch sturgeon that had gathered to spawn at the mouth of Waswanipi River.
It is with great honour, humility, and a strong sense of responsibility that I serve as Chief of the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi for the 2026–2030 term.
I would like to sincerely thank our community members for placing their trust and confidence in the newly elected Council. This responsibility is one that we do not take lightly. As we begin this new chapter, we are committed to working together with our Elders, youth, families, community members, and local organizations to build a strong and prosperous future for Waswanipi.
Our community is built upon a rich history, strong traditions, and the resilience of our people. As we move forward, it is important that we continue to honour our Cree values, culture, language, and connection to the land while also addressing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
I believe that through unity, respect, open communication, and collaboration, we can accomplish great things for our community. The Council are committed to listening to the voices of our members and working toward decisions and initiatives that support the well-being and future of the Cree First Nation of Waswanipi.
I look forward to working alongside Council and our community throughout this mandate. Together, we can continue to strengthen our community and create a positive future for present and future generations. Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and trust. I am honoured to serve the people of Waswanipi.
