The Elders Home Committee worked on the plans for the realization of our local Elders Home. The members of MSDC (Multi Service Day Centre) and clinic assisted in this project. Mr. Richard St. Jean from the Cree Health Board helped with the functional plan and CLSC Director, Allan Moar attended the meetings. There were two Elders that sat on the committee and sadly, one has since passed away.
The residence is at 3 West Jack pine Street and consists of 16 bedrooms. Six are for double occupancy with their own washrooms. The 10 single units share a washroom between the two rooms.
There is a dining room/kitchen area, a larger sitting room and a smaller sitting area for private family sessions. There is, also,a laundry room and a outdoor veranda.
At the front entrance is a reception area and an office for cthe oordinator of the home. There is office space for doctor’s visits and parking space is available near the front entrance.
The training on Health Aide was offered at the Cree School Board Vocational Training Centre and this course was completed by some of our community members.
Since the beginning of the idea to take care of our Elders, there have been 3 different concepts for the Elders home. Waswanipi Council has planned for this type of Elder's care unit since 1991,and it is our hope that this dream will be realized in the near future.
